LOÉVA DUNLEVY

In my studio work, I am exploring contrasting ideas within a hyper expressive story that brings together two fantastical interrelated worlds that are fundamentally connected yet completely incompatible.

One world explores the concept of humans evolving without the harsh trials of natural selection and their dependency on medicine and science to keep bodies alive, even as they disintegrate and souls rot. In contrast, in the other, humans have evolved to adapt to the changing world, the inevitable ecological disasters and the natural affliction of diseases and illness, becoming whimsical and perfect creatures, not unlike the creatures we’ve imagined in mythology and folklore that oppose mankind.

A perfect specimen and a lonely dying girl are each a manifestation of their environment and the two characters of this story, and what happens when these two worlds come together is the theme explored in this exhibition.

I would like my exhibition to be like a portal through which viewers can catch a glimpse of the characters’ lives and struggles, and step into a strange and wonderfully expressive and dreamlike space that reflects the central themes and dynamics of their story. At the core of my studio work, I am curious to examine the strangest, beautiful and terrible parts of ourselves. I believe dismissing fantastical tales as pure fantasy to be a mistake, as deep truths can be reflected through stories and interacting with them.

The limitless ways of telling a story and moving an audience hugely fascinates me, and in my exhibition I am interested in exploring several storytelling methods and mediums such as painting, animation, sound and music, light, installation and textiles. I don’t view such art forms as separate, instead, I am curious to combine mediums and sensory elements to create an immersive experience that brings to life the mystery, whimsy and drama of these two worlds colliding.
